6 of the Most Common Plumbing Problems Homeowners Face

While some of the most common residential plumbing problems have easy DIY fixes, others are better left to a pro. A professional plumber can make repairs and install replacements that will last longer than DIY jobs with less risk of further damage when plumbing problems arise.

  1. Clogged drain – Minor clogs can often be flushed out by pouring in a mixture of 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar, letting it sit for five minutes, then the running hot water. A plumber can remove a major drain clog using a drain snake (hand auger) or other methods.
  2. Leaky faucet – Fixing a leaky faucet usually requires replacing the faucet’s washer, but in the future turning your faucets on and off gently will help prevent the damage that causes leaks.
  3. Leaky pipe – From incorrect installation to corrosion, a wide variety of issues can cause pipe leaks. Having your plumbing professionally inspected annually helps head off serious leaks.
  4. Running toilet – One of the most common residential plumbing problems in homes with older plumbing fixtures, this is often caused by a flapper or flush valve that needs cleaning or replacement, a tangled float chain or a mis-aligned float. If you can’t spot the problem or aren’t sure how to solve it, contact a plumber. A constantly running toilet wastes gallons of water each day.
  5. Leaky toilet – A toilet leaking water around the base can sometimes be repaired simply by tightening the bolts or replacing the wax rings around them. If this doesn’t help, the water may actually be coming from another part of the toilet, requiring professional care.
  6. No hot water – A sudden lack of hot water is unpleasant, but not always hard to solve. If you have a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is on. Also check that the temperature is set to at least 122 degrees, hot enough to provide warm water and prevent harmful bacteria growth. For more serious problems, call a pro.
