3 Signs It’s Time To Upgrade Your Home Heating System

With the Los Angeles area’s mild winter, it’s not always obvious when your heating system isn’t performing the way it used to. Knowing the signs can help you decide when it’s worth upgrading the heating system to something more reliable and efficient.

  1. Your bills are rising – No matter how well you care for your heating system, as it ages, it will lose some efficiency. That means each year you’ll be getting less heat for the same amount of money. If you’ve noticed your heating bills seem to go up every winter no matter what the weather or how well you weatherize your home, chances are your heating system is to blame. By upgrading the heating system, you’ll enjoy greater energy efficiency and lower bills.
  2. You have temperature and humidity issues – Some old heating systems still in use contain single-stage motors that have only an “off” and a “high” setting. This leads to temperature swings, hot and cold spots around the house, and excessively dry air in winter. These problems can also happen if your installation technician oversized your system. Modern furnaces use two-stage or variable-speed motors to better regulate heat output, giving you more stable, even temperatures. With a new installation, you can make sure the system is correctly sized.
  3. Your system is old – Furnaces and heat pumps have a lifespan of around 15 years, although heat pumps tend to give out earlier than furnaces. Before these systems fail completely, though, they develop performance problems that impair your comfort and put them at risk for surprise break downs. That means you could suddenly find yourself without heat late on a chilly winter night when repair technicians charge premium rates. If your heating system is 10 or more years old, it’s time to upgrade. This goes double if you’ve had to call a repair technician more than once this winter. Upgrading will save you both hassle and repair costs.
