3 Surprising Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Although your indoor air may not look or smell bad, it can be harboring a number of harmful pollutants, including pollen, pet dander, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and mold. Some of your family members may have sensitivities to these pollutants, and even if they don’t, allergic reactions can be developed over time. Use the tips below to improve indoor air quality in your home.

improve indoor air qualityAdd Plants

Adding plants to clean the air is a low-tech and low-cost way to improve air quality. Certain indoor plants are recognized for their ability to take in pollutants along with carbon dioxide as part of the oxygen-producing photosynthesis process. Microorganisms in the soil in which the plants are potted also help clean the air. Some of the best plants for removing pollutants from your home’s air are Dracaena, spider plant, garden mum, snake plant, Boston fern, peace lily, aloe vera and bamboo palm. Be aware, however, that some of these plants produce pollen when they bloom.

Upgrade the Air Filter

One of the easiest ways to keep your home’s air cleaner is to upgrade the air filter. Choose a better quality, pleated air filter, rated 8-12 on the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) scale, and made of cotton and polyester fibers. The dense, pleated area of these better-quality filters provides more surface to catch pollutants before they are drawn into the HVAC system and recirculated into the home’s air. It’s helpful to stir up carpets by vacuuming (use a high efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filter) while running the HVAC so that fibers and particulates will be drawn into the HVAC filter.

Limit Pollution at the Source

Follow these basic tips for cleaner air: never allow smoking in the home; take shoes off at the door; ventilate moisture to the outdoors; air out dry cleaning before bringing it indoors; and tightly cap chemicals such as cleaners, solvents and pesticides.
