3 Things To Consider When Choosing A New Toilet

choosing a new toiletChoosing a new toilet is the perfect opportunity to add a little style and comfort to your bathroom while also lowering your water bills. When you know what to look for, you’ll be able to find just the right model among the hundreds of choices out there.

1 • Size

To find out what size toilet you’ll need, measure your current toilet’s rough-in distance. This is the distance from the wall to the middle of the toilet flange, where the bolts are. For most toilets, it’s 12 inches, but standard toilets fit rough-in distances between 11 to 13 inches. For anything outside this range, look for a model specifically designed for that distance.

Standard toilet seats are 15 inches from the floor, but 17-inch models are also available and can be more comfortable for the elderly and those with physical impairments. An elongated bowl is also more comfortable for most people compared to a round bowl.

2 • Design

Toilets come in one-piece, two-piece, and wall-mounted designs. Two-piece toilets, which have a separate bowl and tank, are the most common, but the joints increase their risk of leaking. One-piece toilets are less likely to leak and have a sleeker appearance, but cost more than two-piece models. Wall-mounted toilets give you a stylish modern look, but their relative rarity and complex installation requirements make them more expensive than floor-mounted models.

3 • Water Efficiency

The toilet is the biggest water-user in most homes, so when you’re choosing a new toilet, it’s worth looking for a model that will help you save. Water Sense-labelled toilets use 20 percent less water than standard models, yet perform just as reliably. To save even more, choose a dual-flush model, which gives you the option of a standard flush for solid waste and a more water-efficient flush for liquid waste. A pressure-assist model will also save over a traditional gravity toilet, although it will cost more up front.
