5 Ways To Avoid Common Plumbing Problems

plumbing problemsLeaks, clogs, water heater breakdowns, and other common plumbing issues are always a nuisance and, at worst, can cause serious damage to your home. By taking care of your system correctly, though, you can avoid many of these problems so you’ll rarely need a professional plumbing service.

  1. Be careful what you rinse away – Most drain clogs are caused by substances that should never have gone into the drain in the first place. Never rinse down fats, such as cooking oil or melted butter, or coffee grounds. Collect these in a container, then throw them in the trash. Use drain strainers to keep soap scum, hair, and other debris out of the drains.
  2. Maintain your drains – Clean your drains weekly. Bring a pan of water to a boil, then stir in 3 or 4 Tbsp. of liquid dish soap. Slowly pour the soapy water into the drain and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then flush the drain with another pan of boiling hot water.
  3. Stay alert for leaks and drips – If you notice a faucet dripping, repair it as soon as possible. You can find faucet repair kits at home improvement stores. If you’re not comfortable taking the faucet apart, contact a professional plumbing service. Once a month or so, inspect your exposed pipes for developing leaks and other damage.
  4. Care for your water heater – To prevent a build up of sediment that can damage your water heater’s tank, flush your water heater once a year. If you have very hard water, you might need to do this more often. Once every three to five years, inspect your tank’s sacrificial anode and replace it if it’s corroded.
  5. Schedule routine inspections – Just like the other systems in your home, your plumbing system benefits from regular professional inspections. An expert from a professional plumbing service can spot developing leaks, clogs, and other issues and take care of them before they even start to affect you.

Keep clog-forming substances out of your drain and stay on top of routine plumbing maintenance, and surprise plumbing problems will rarely trouble you.
